Some of the oldest remains in human history were removed from their cave of origin just this week in the state of Quintana Roo near Cancun, Mexico. The skeleton was actually found four years earlier by German cave divers that had discovered them while trying new passes of a Cenote (underground river) in Quintana Roo. The ancient human's body has been dubbed, “The Young Man Chan Hol.”

After years of study in the cave, so as to prevent information loss, the bones were finally surfaced and relocated. The conducted research as part of a National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) project established that the bones were more than 10,000 years old. This dates them to the Ice Age and places them in the company of the oldest human remains found in the Americas.

Partial bones from three more ancient skeletons were also found in nearby caves. The 60% of skeleton belonging to The Young Man Chan Hol that were removed from the cave will undergo studies in the next few months to see if the features match those other skeletons.
